A Peace of Art

West Coast Façade Arts is the first of its kind in Singapore 2014. It was conceptualised by Ms. Dawn Tam and Artist Sun Yu-Li, after Ms. Shamini of the People Association was impressed by the project, Love. Revolve the World, that was exhibited at SAM (Singapore Art Museum) in 2013. We were invited to bounce ideas to create Big Format art for SG50 highlights. The rest is history where over 100 HDBs were decorated with façade arts. We were thinking hard about involving people, and yet need not climb up HDB and paint. Ms. Dawn recalled that her late father always used canvases for painting, for advertisement boards and Movies in the 60-80s. Therefore, canvases became the choice of media after several experiments were conducted. Façade Art was born in Singapore, uniquely Singapore.

On 29 June 2014, ArtBeatz collaborated with internationally-acclaimed artist, Sun Yu-Li, and the West Coast residents to launch one of Singapore’s largest community art installations – West Coast Façade Art, A Peace of Art. Measuring 26 metres by 22 metres, the project was part of the West Coast CCAC initiative to encourage artistic co-creation between artists and residents and to embolden a collective identity within the community. Sun Yu-Li started off with his signature lines, dots and circles, providing a visual guide to inspire the community to freely express their emotions and messages on the canvas panels. 400 enthusiastic participants from all walks of life dedicated their time and effort to paint 36 panels, which were later hung on the façade of their residential block, located at Block 728 Clementi West Street 2.
